A Navy Seals team raided a villa in Baraawe south of Mogadishu this weekend. Their target was a Norwegian-Somali man who allegedly plays an important role in the terrorist group al-Shabaab.

The US radio station NPR and The New York Times report that the Norwegian-Somali apparently escaped the attack of Navy Seal Team 6, which was the unit that killed the terrorist leader Osama bin Laden in 2011.

Ikrimah al-Muhajir, which is the man’s nom de guerre, is 28 years old. TV 2 Norway knows his real name and that he arrived in Norway in 2004 and applied for asylum there. According to TV 2’s knowledge, he is in possession of Norwegian travel documents.

He is reported to play an important role in the planning and execution of terrorist attacks outside of the Somali borders, and he has allegedly been trained to execute terrorist attacks in Europe.

While living in Norway, he travelled to Somalia and in periods stayed there. He was probably active in the terrorist organization al-Shabaab already at the time. In 2008 he disappeared from Norway, before any decision was made regarding his application for asylum.

Cooperated with terrorists

While living in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, Ikrimah got in touch with the group behind the attacks on the US embassies in Nairobi and Dar-es-Salaam in 1998. Among them is the terrorist Saleh Nabhan, who has cooperated with the Norwegian-Somali.

– Nabhan and Ikrimah were together. He spoke to me in Norwegian. I was going to give him things for Nabhan, the Danish agent Morten Storm said to TV 2 Norway in December last year.

After a while, Ikrimah and his collaborators made contact with al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, and Ikrimah has written bomb manuals for the terrorist organization’s magazine.

Here he focused on how to produce bombs that may pass unnoticed through security controls. This allegedly has made the Americans extremely interested in stopping him.

He has reportedly also been involved in the attack on the shopping centre in Nairobi two weeks ago, but this has not yet been confirmed.

He lived in the Oslo area during his stay in Norway, and had contact with other persons in the Somalian community.

Two Swedes, who were living in Norway at the time, later went to a training facility in Somalia and was trained by al-Shabaab. These are persons that probably got in through Ikrimah during the time he lived in Norway.

Swedish-Somali probably killed

According to The Telegraph, two other men were killed by the American special forces, one of them a Swedish-Somali and the other one reportedly from Sudan.

The British newspaper refers to a source in al-Shabaab in Somalia, but does not reveal the identity of the two men.
