Trump møtt av store protester i hjembyen

Donald Trump ble møtt av høylytte protester da han kom hjem til leiligheten i New York for første gang siden han tok over som USAs president.

«Han kom til sitt eget, og hans egne tok ikke imot ham», heter det i Bibelen. Omtrent slik føltes det kanskje også for Trump da eiendomsmagnaten kom tilbake til verdensbyen der han har bygget opp sitt forretningsimperium. Skjønt det vil være urettferdig overfor newyorkerne å kalle dem «Trumps egne». Han fikk 36,5 prosent av stemmene i delstaten, mot Hillary Clintons 59,1, og få steder sto Demokratene sterkere enn på Manhattan.

Trump er ventet å tilbringe flere dager av ferien i hjembyen, og utenfor Trump Tower hadde flere hundre demonstranter samlet seg for vise sin motstand mot presidenten og hans gjerning. «Hey, hey! Ho, ho! Rasisten Trump må gå» var ett av slagordene som ble ropt utenfor skyskraperen som bærer presidentens navn.

– Kjærlighet, ikke hat. Det er det som gjør Amerika storslagent, ropte gruppen og brukte Trumps valgkampslagord mot ham.

– Jeg er livredd for det som skjer med landet vårt, og det at hvit makt-tilhengere, nazister og antisemitter føler seg styrket av presidenten. Han river ned det forfedrene bygde opp, sier 68 år gamle Lynn Gray.

Kevin Gallagher (61) sier han først ga Trump en sjanse til tross for at han hadde lite til overs for ham.

– Men denne uken har vært et lavmål i hans presidentskap. Han må se hva hans medborgere synes om ham.

Trump har fått kritikk fra begge sider av amerikansk politikk for hans kommentarer og håndtering av hendelsene i Charlottesville, der nasjonalister og nynazister samlet seg. Da en motdemonstrant ble kjørt ned og drept, gikk Trump ut mot vold «på alle sider». Først etter flere dager fordømte han rasisme og de høyreekstreme kreftene. Det var for lite og for sent for mange.
